| BARNARD CASTLE The Ancient Unicorn Inn

Excellent friendly welcome and service. Rooms in the older part of the hotel allow dogs & are also very suitable for walkers needing respite from camping in bad weather. These rooms have a lower tariff and basic but are excellent value for money. They have bar food and allow the dogs in the bar. Their restaurant food is excellent & they provide an a la carte menu.

CHESTER LE STREET The Butchers Arms
Can definitely recommend relaxing here after a walk in the woods behind Lumley Castle. Then why not use the Smiths Arms as a half way pitstop too as PLEASE NOTE The Butchers Arms are only partially dog-friendly. Dogs are welcome when meals are not being served although this is more about being welcoming to diners who are not keen in dogs rather that the Landlady's personal feeling. As it prides itself in being the last "proper" pub in the town centre and has a good selection of real ale as well as at least two guest ales at any time.

EGGLESTON Moorcock Inn

At the heart of Upper Teesdale in the North Pennine moors, the Moorcock Inn is a classic north country pub with local real ales, a huge selection of single malts, and excellent home cooked food. This is wonderful walking country, remote footpaths, beautiful unspoilt moorlands, great waterfalls and dramatic castles. After which, a drink on the terrace at the Moorcook, watching the sunsets for which Teesdale is famous. This is also gun dog territory, so look forward to meeting a few working locals. Dogs are welcome throughout the pub (and in the restaurant if not too crowded) as well as bed and breakfast rooms. Fresh water and chews available.

Beautiful hotel, close to the busy A66 trans-Pennine route, but surprisingly tranquil. The bar area (with fabulous murals) is very dog-friendly, and regularly has wet hounds in it. The garden is lovely too, in sunny weather. There are great walks up the River Greta or along the Tees. The food in the bar is excellent, and Timothy Taylor's Landlord is on draught...
