APETHORPE The King's Head

You won't be welcome in this village unless you pronounce the name 'Appthorpe'. The current spelling is fairly modern - noone knows why. DP Supporter's Lab is very welcome, especially as she always orders a Guinness. The food is fairly adventurous, with a handful of menu choices varying daily. Always advised to book if intending to eat, but don't try on a Sunday evening - they're closed.

BULWICK Queens Head

Ancient pub with cheery involved licensees, interesting beers, popular heartily flavoured food including game. Recommended in Good Pub guide for both food and beer, dogs welcomed inside and out with water bowls provided. Thoughtfully sourced beers - well kept and served from a stone bar counter - include Shepherd Neame Spitfire, with three interesting guests from brewers such as Blythe, Elland and the very local Rockingham. Excellent and interesting food; the changing menu uses traditional european cooking methods and robustly flavoured ingredients, and much of the game served here is caught by the landlord. Dishes might include lunchtime sandwiches, pressed ox tongue with watercress salad, smoked eel with shaved fennel and lemon and horseradish crème fraîche and much more!
This is an attractive bypassed village in an area where you may be lucky enough to see red kites, and there can be few more pleasant experiences than a summer evening on the garden terrace (with its own well) listening to swallows and martins, sheep in the adjacent field and bells ringing in the nearby church.
