Always a good welcome here for those with two legs and those with four. Family and dog friendly pub; always doggie chews behind the bar and water for the dogs. Also, pleasant walks along the Derwent just a few yards away. The menu range is not vast, but the food is excellent value, especially for a pub so close to the city centre. Several real ales and ciders, all kept well.

A doggie friendly pub on Centenary Way footpath in the heart of West Hallam village. Dogs are allowed in the large bar area and the eating areas to the front of the pub. The landlady is very friendly and always has a water bowl ready for the numerous dogs that are usually found lying patiently for their owners. The food is good, no specials but pie night is on Wednesdays and worth a visit. Sunday lunches have a good reputation too although I haven't tried them yet.

On the Leicestershire / Derbyshire border , this pub has lovely walks at nearby National Trust property, Calke Abbey and footpaths across the fields. The pub website even has downloadable walks. There is a cosy snug with wood burner for dog walkers to eat in but recommend booking as there are only four tables in this room. Food was home cooked with a set two courses for £12.50 plus a specials board. Unfortunately, we visited on a gorgeous sunny day when walkers were out in their droves, so by the time we ordered at 2 pm, a lot of the set course menu mains had run out. But the substitute roast turkey was nice & the chocolate fudge cake with cherries more than made up for lack of choice on the set menu!

I have been going there for years. It's a local pub with front rooms, a pool table and a main bar. It does pub quizzes etc. Real ale is available. The staff are always ready with the treats and most who go there (I've never met anyone who doesn't but sometimes there is one) love dogs. The back garden isn't really a garden but there is a good size area with tables and chickens.
The landlord and the staff are very friendly. I believe they may make pub made pizzas on request. Can any supporters tell us more about the food options?

The Chequers is a very charming and well run hostilery. It's always busy and does not have a big menu, in fact the extremely helpful and cheerful staff will make you a sandwich or Ploughman's lunch to order. Tony the landlord and his lovely wife Claire are extremely helpful and will make you feel very comfortable and welcome. They saved the pub from being sold And turned into a private house. The local people love the pub now and the way it is being run.
It's a short walk from Calke Abbey so a great pit stop after a long stroll with the dog. Pooches welcome both inside and out, dog water bowl outside the door for them to re-hydrate.
