Large-ish pub with a beer garden (well more of a beer patio) to the front, next to Colchester castle on the east end of the high street. They had two Adnams and Deuchers IPA on tap. This pub has some very bad reviews on qype/beerintheevening but possibly those are for Friday/Saturday nights or similar, staff have been very friendly during the day at least. Slightly odd decor - human skulls on the walls etc., this might be a reference to the castle, if there are/were goth regulars we've not seen them. Food is quite basic but generally fine.

We went here after a long walk with our retrievers to the huge bird reserve at Abberton reservoir and since our last visit a few years ago there's a huge change. A complete makeover so that all the old beams and floors have been cleaned and restored and look great. The food is just fabulous and great value, way better than anything else we have tried locally with a great menu choice. Dogs are allowed in the bar and lower eating level (the upper area is carpeted so fair enough), with water bowls and a very dog-friendly landlady who kept feeding our two retrievers with biscuits. A great find.

Dog friendly pub with high quality food. It is extremely popular so you'll need to book at weekends. Sign on wall 'Well behaved dogs welcome - screaming brats must be on short lead at all times'! Between Terling and Great Leighs.

Great pub. Had a fab stay and my cockerpoo who was made very welcome. She stayed in the room with me. Locals bring in their own dogs too in both the bar and restaurant. There is also a small park behind pub patio for all important comfort breaks and a leg stretch. Lots of lovely walks nearby too along the river. Food was fab including excellent breakfasts.

Excellent pub with good food and local Nethergate ale. Dropped by at 2pm after last orders for food but we were made to feel most welcome with our dog and a sandwich was rustled up very quickly. We sat in the courtyard garden as it was a nice day but we would have been able to sit in the bar had we wanted to. I would recommend this pub.

The interior is very special too and the staff were very welcoming of us and our two greyhounds bringing them a bowl of water unprompted. This is a classy place.

Stars

  • StarsThis icon is for.....

Stars are awarded by YOU.

Please help us get the stars right, they indicate overall dog-friendliness. So a simple pub may deserve 5 Stars, whereas a very smart gastropub may only receive 1, (or visa versa).

Stars represent Your Views, SO...

If you think that one of the listed pubs needs more or less Stars PLEASE just HOVER OVER Rate Pub link AND CLICK THE STARS. Your new rating will get sent to us.

Why have some pubs got no stars?

Because no one has told us yet how many it deserves! Please bear with us while we update the pubs, this may take a little while as there are OVER 7000!

As you can see we do need your help with the new dog-friendly ratings. This is an excellent excuse to visit all the pubs that are local to you and do some serious research. Ideally every pub should be ‘starred and iconned’. Woof, woof!
