Fabulous dog friendly pub situated near to the canal, so you can take your pooch for a walk before or after dining. Choose from a great range of tapas, home comfort food or daily specials all cooked fresh and to a high standard, presented beautifully. I had pressed belly pork with crispy skin, fondant potatoes, cherries, green beans, cider jus. My friend had homemade smoked haddock fish cakes. Finished off nicely with a beautiful hot cappuccino. The staff where so friendly and really looked after us, bringing fresh water for our dog. The highlight was the owner's amazing chocolate Labrador who greeted us on arrival. (Blaze) We will be visiting regularly.

Super friendly and warm welcome from staff and locals. I was even invited to a birthday party at the pub.
Dogs and walkers welcome in the snug area where the floor is flagged.
Food is superb, atmosphere is warm and overall a really lovely pub.
Visited twice over a weekend in March 2016.
Good choice of foods from bar snacks, steaks and traditional pub food.

Originally the town house of the Earls of Shrewsbury, has served as an inn since the 18th century. Later John Lennon's grandmother, Annie Jane Millward, was born in the Bear and Billet in 1873. So you might meet a famous ghost.

Excellent Sunday roasts are my favourites from here; all home cooked with Yorkshire puddings just as they should be. Never been let down with food and the welcome for us and our 2 dogs. Always a jar of tasty treats for the pooches waiting on the bar. Roaring open log fire during the colder weather to sit in front of with a glass of your favourite tipple. Very welcoming indeed and well worth a visit as the pub dates from the 16th century when it started as a coaching inn. Who knows, you may even find company with the ghost.

A wonderful and friendly welcome from all the staff. Dogs (as many as you like) are allowed throughout the extensive bar. My dog had cuddles, water and biscuits in that order. Although we only had basket meals; sausage and scampi (in a mini supermarket shopping basket), they were both fantastic, with proper chips. There are some great ales available. Tuesdays are Biscuit Tuesday, where all the dogs get loads of biscuits.
