Dogs allowed in bar area, great food, Black Sheep beers plus a couple of others. Stressed out barmaid/waitress could do an extra pair of hands to help out. Not quite sure why it's the AA pub of the year though with the much more friendly Kings Head in the same village. oops!

I stayed at the Royal Oak in Appleby for a weekend. It was fantastic, they gave me a doggy bag next to the bowl in my bedroom and there was patio doors from the room going out into the garden, they even had poo bags so the humans could clean up after me!
They offer a superb doggy menu at meal times and best of all, they didn't care that I jumped all over the bed with muddy paws.

Nice little pub in village near to motor way, ideal for lunch if you are en route. Good quality classics with local produce, some more adventurous dishes on the specials board including fish. Very friendly landlord and atmosphere, water was served at the table in dog bowl. Be wary of accomodation as costs for dogs are (apparently) 'excessive'.

SHAP The Greyhound
Address: Main Street, Shap, CA10 3PW
Tel: 01931 716 474
Web: www.greyhoundshap.co.uk
Atmospheric ancient stone inn on the southern outskirts of Shap. Inside it is surprisingly swish with a modern front area and a plainer stone-floored walkers' area at the back. Food hearty to gargantuan (one beef sandwich would feed a family). You'll receive a warm welcome too. An elaborate circular swing door some dogs find difficult (some love it!)but just signal to the landlord and he'll happily provide an easier alternative. The tract between Penrith and Kendal isn't over-stocked with decent pubs and there are even fewer which are also dog-friendly so this is well worth a five-star.
Dog-friendly B and B rooms are available with no fee added to the standard rate.
